Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil
Portugal's first cancer institute, founded in 1923 by Francisco Gentil, and the national reference cancer hospital for the Lisbon region.
The Instituto Português de Oncologia was founded in Lisbon in 1923 by the surgeon Francisco Gentil and gave rise to the national IPO network; IPO Lisboa remains the country's largest dedicated cancer hospital and is OECI-accredited. It provides surgical, medical, radiation and paediatric oncology, haematology and bone marrow transplantation, nuclear medicine and palliative care, and hosts a research unit working on molecular pathology, haematological malignancies and cancer epidemiology, together with Portugal's southern regional cancer registry. Patients access national referral services for rare tumours, sarcoma and paediatric cancers and a growing clinical trials programme.
