Egypt's national cancer institute and the largest cancer hospital in Africa and the Arab world, treating patients from across the region since 1969.
The National Cancer Institute of Cairo University was established in 1969 and is the largest specialised cancer institute in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East, providing surgical, medical, radiation and paediatric oncology, haematology and bone marrow transplant, pathology and nuclear medicine, and training the majority of Egypt's oncologists through Cairo University. It hosts a large research programme and tumour registry, contributes to Egypt's national cancer registry and to studies of hepatocellular carcinoma driven by the country's hepatitis C epidemic, schistosomiasis-associated bladder cancer, breast cancer and paediatric leukaemia, and it participates in international multicentre trials and in regional cancer control initiatives with the WHO Eastern Mediterranean office.
