Instituto Nacional de Câncer (INCA)
Brazil's national cancer institute, the Ministry of Health body that runs cancer control, registries and screening for the country and treats patients in its Rio hospitals.
INCA was created in 1937 and is the Brazilian Ministry of Health's agency for national cancer policy, running the population and hospital cancer registries, cancer incidence estimates, the national tobacco control programme (a global model recognised by WHO), and cervical and breast screening guidelines for the public health system (SUS). It operates several hospital units in Rio de Janeiro providing surgical, medical, radiation and paediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant, hosts a research centre in cancer biology, epidemiology and clinical trials, and coordinates Brazil's national bone marrow donor registry (REDOME), one of the largest in the world. INCA trains oncology specialists nationally and publishes the reference Estimativa reports on Brazil's cancer burden.
