Instituto Nacional de Cancerología (Mexico)
Mexico's national cancer institute, the federal referral hospital for uninsured cancer patients and the country's main oncology research and training centre.
The Instituto Nacional de Cancerología was founded in 1946 as one of Mexico's National Institutes of Health and is the federal reference hospital for cancer, treating mostly uninsured adults from across the country and setting national treatment guidelines. It runs surgical, medical and radiation oncology, haematology, nuclear medicine and palliative care, hosts the Mexican national cancer registry effort and cancer epidemiology, and its research units in genomics (with the National Institute of Genomic Medicine), tumour biology and clinical trials have made it Latin America's most productive Spanish-language cancer research institution. INCan investigators lead studies in cervical cancer, breast cancer in Hispanic women, gastric cancer and lung cancer in never-smokers, and it trains a large share of Mexico's oncologists.
