Institut Salah Azaïez
Tunisia's national cancer institute, one of the oldest in Africa (1969), and North Africa's main centre for cancer registration, breast cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma research.
The Institut Salah Azaïez in Tunis was founded in 1969 and named for the Tunisian surgeon who championed cancer care; it is Tunisia's national cancer institute and reference hospital, attached to the Université de Tunis El Manar faculty of medicine, providing surgical, medical and radiation oncology, brachytherapy, nuclear medicine, paediatric oncology and pathology. The institute runs the Tunis population-based cancer registry, one of the longest-running in Africa and a contributor to IARC's Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, and its research addresses breast cancer in young North African women, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and EBV, cervical cancer screening, hereditary cancer, and radiotherapy quality across the Maghreb. It trains oncologists for Tunisia and francophone Africa.
