Uganda Cancer Institute
East Africa's oldest cancer research institute, founded in 1967 to study Burkitt lymphoma, and now a national cancer centre with a Fred Hutch partnership and Africa's first purpose-built cancer research facility.
The Uganda Cancer Institute was established in 1967 at Mulago Hospital in Kampala by US National Cancer Institute and Makerere University researchers to study Burkitt lymphoma, the tumour first described in Uganda by Denis Burkitt, and early chemotherapy cure of Burkitt lymphoma and combination chemotherapy for Kaposi sarcoma were tested there. Since 2004 it has partnered with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, which built the UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre in 2015, the first comprehensive cancer research and training facility in sub-Saharan Africa built for that purpose, and the institute now runs Uganda's national cancer services, radiotherapy, paediatric oncology, cancer registries and regional cancer centres, and research on infection-related cancers (EBV, KSHV, HPV, HIV), cervical cancer screening and access to essential cancer medicines.
