Johannesburg's flagship academic hospital and Wits University's oncology hub, running South Africa's largest public radiation and medical oncology service and pioneering African cancer cohorts.

Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, formerly the Johannesburg General Hospital, is the main tertiary hospital of the University of the Witwatersrand and hosts the largest public-sector oncology service in South Africa, with radiation oncology, medical oncology, haematology and bone marrow transplant, gynaecological and surgical oncology, and paediatric oncology. Wits research includes the Johannesburg Cancer Study, one of Africa's largest case-control studies of cancer risk factors and HIV, breast cancer outcomes in Black South African women, cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination studies, Kaposi sarcoma and lymphoma in HIV, and the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre's transplant and hepatobiliary programmes. Wits also partners with the National Health Laboratory Service and the National Cancer Registry.
