Ocean Road Cancer Institute
Tanzania's national cancer institute, for many years the only cancer treatment centre in the country and the base of its cancer control programme.
Ocean Road Cancer Institute in Dar es Salaam occupies the former Ocean Road Hospital, built in 1897 during German colonial rule, and became Tanzania's national cancer institute in 1996. It was for two decades the country's only public cancer treatment facility and remains the national referral centre, providing radiotherapy (cobalt and now linear accelerators and brachytherapy), chemotherapy, palliative care and cervical cancer screening, and hosting the national cancer registry and training with the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. ORCI's caseload is dominated by cervical cancer, Kaposi sarcoma, breast and oesophageal cancer, and it partners on HPV vaccination, screen-and-treat and access-to-medicines programmes for East Africa.
