Champalimaud Foundation – Champalimaud Clinical Centre

The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown opened in 2010 on the Lisbon waterfront as a neuroscience and cancer research institute with an attached clinical centre. Fátima Cardoso directs its breast unit and chairs the international ESO-ESMO Advanced Breast Cancer (ABC) consensus guidelines, the digestive unit is a reference for rectal cancer organ preservation and pancreatic surgery, and the radiation oncology department was among the first in Europe to install new-generation stereotactic and MR-guided systems. Research groups study cancer-nervous system interactions, exosome-mediated metastasis (Bruno Costa-Silva), tumour immunology and computational oncology. The foundation also runs the Champalimaud Vision Award and public engagement programmes.
