BC Cancer

aka BC Cancer Agency, British Columbia Cancer Agency

British Columbia's provincial cancer agency, a world leader in cancer genomics (Personalized OncoGenomics), lymphoma research and HPV-based cervical screening.

BC Cancer, part of the Provincial Health Services Authority, delivers cancer care through six regional centres and runs the province's screening programmes and registry. Its Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre under Marco Marra launched the Personalized OncoGenomics programme in 2012, one of the first to sequence whole genomes and transcriptomes of patients' tumours to guide therapy. Sam Aparicio co-led METABRIC and pioneered single-cell genomics of breast cancer; David Huntsman's OVCARE group discovered ARID1A mutations in clear-cell ovarian cancer; Randy Gascoyne, Christian Steidl and Joseph Connors built one of the world's leading lymphoma programmes, including co-leadership of ECHELON-1 for brentuximab vedotin in Hodgkin lymphoma. Gina Ogilvie's HPV FOCAL trial helped move BC to HPV-based primary cervical screening, and Connie Eaves's Terry Fox Laboratory shaped stem cell biology.
