Ottawa's academic cancer centre, a world leader in oncolytic viruses (John Bell), the first made-in-Canada CAR-T trial and pragmatic REaCT trials.
The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) form eastern Ontario's academic cancer programme with the University of Ottawa. John Bell's laboratory is one of the world's leading oncolytic virus groups, developing the Maraba MG1 and vaccinia platforms and co-founding Turnstone Biologics; Rebecca Auer studies perioperative immunotherapy to prevent metastasis after surgery. Natasha Kekre led CLIC-01, the first clinical trial of a CAR-T product manufactured in Canada, and the Rethinking Clinical Trials (REaCT) programme, led by Mark Clemons and Dean Fergusson, embeds pragmatic randomised trials into routine cancer care. The centre also hosts a large radiation oncology and haematology service.
