Aarhus University Hospital
Denmark's second academic hospital, home of the national proton therapy centre and of the DAHANCA head and neck radiotherapy trials.
Aarhus University Hospital hosts the Danish Centre for Particle Therapy, the country's national proton facility, which opened in 2019 with Varian ProBeam gantries and treats patients from across Denmark within randomised trials. Its experimental clinical oncology department under Jens Overgaard has run the DAHANCA head and neck cancer trials for decades, establishing accelerated fractionation and the hypoxic radiosensitiser nimorazole, and pioneered clinical hyperthermia with radiotherapy for melanoma. The hospital is a major transplant, urological cancer and gastrointestinal surgery centre, contributes to Danish Breast Cancer Group trials, and leads registry-based studies through Aarhus University's clinical epidemiology department.
