Hokkaido University Hospital
Sapporo's university hospital, which pioneered real-time tumour-tracking radiotherapy and gated proton therapy with Hitachi.
Hokkaido University Hospital is the main academic hospital of Japan's northern island and is internationally known in radiation oncology: Hiroki Shirato's group developed real-time tumour-tracking radiotherapy using implanted fiducial markers, which became the basis of the gated spot-scanning proton system built with Hitachi and opened at the hospital in 2014. The hospital also has strong gastroenterological surgery, urology (a leading Japanese site for prostate cancer research) and haematology, and Hokkaido University's Institute for Genetic Medicine and Global Center for Biomedical Science and Engineering work on cancer immunology and quantum medical science. It is a core hospital for genome medicine in Hokkaido.
