University of Malaya Medical Centre
Malaysia's leading academic hospital, with the UM Cancer Research Institute and landmark multi-ethnic breast cancer genetics and outcomes studies.
The University of Malaya Medical Centre opened in 1968 as the teaching hospital of Malaysia's oldest university and remains its top research hospital. Its oncology programmes include breast surgery and medical oncology, whose Malaysian Breast Cancer Genetic Study with Cancer Research Malaysia (Teo Soo-Hwang) produced the largest Asian breast cancer genetic risk datasets and polygenic risk research; clinical oncology and radiotherapy with early adoption of advanced techniques; haematology and transplant; and colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery. The UM Cancer Research Institute and the Faculty of Medicine's cohort studies inform Malaysia's national cancer control policy and Asian-specific risk models.
