QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute
Queensland's medical research institute, a world leader in melanoma and skin cancer genetics, cancer epidemiology and adoptive T-cell therapy for virus-associated cancers.
QIMR Berghofer was founded in 1945 as the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and works alongside the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Herston. Its cancer research is anchored in genetic epidemiology, with leading roles in melanoma and skin cancer genetics (Nicholas Hayward, David Whiteman), the QSkin cohort, and the Australian breast and ovarian cancer family studies (Georgia Chenevix-Trench, kConFab collaborations), and in immunology, where Rajiv Khanna's group developed EBV- and CMV-specific T-cell therapies for nasopharyngeal carcinoma and glioblastoma and Mark Smyth's laboratory shaped NK-cell and checkpoint immunology. The institute operates a GMP cell therapy facility (Q-Gen) and a clinical trials centre.
