Shaare Zedek Medical Center

aka Sha'are Zedek, Shaarei Tzedek

Jerusalem's community-facing academic hospital, home of ESMO-MCBS architect Nathan Cherny and leading BRCA population screening research.

Founded in 1902, Shaare Zedek Medical Center is one of Jerusalem's two large academic hospitals. Nathan Cherny, who directs its cancer pain and palliative medicine service, chairs the working group behind the ESMO Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale used to grade the value of cancer treatments, and Ephrat Levy-Lahad's Medical Genetics Institute has led studies showing the feasibility of population-based BRCA1/2 screening in Ashkenazi Jewish women. The hospital's oncology and haematology institutes provide comprehensive treatment, and the centre has a strong tradition in supportive and palliative care, medical ethics and access to medicines research.
