PGIMER was established in 1962 as an institute of national importance and is the main tertiary referral centre for north-west India. Its oncology services span a regional cancer centre with radiotherapy and brachytherapy, medical and surgical oncology, and paediatric haematology-oncology, and its Department of Nuclear Medicine is among India's most active in PSMA and FAPI PET imaging and lutetium-based radioligand therapy. PGIMER researchers publish extensively on cervical cancer screening, gallbladder cancer, chronic myeloid leukaemia and cancer epidemiology in Punjab, and the institute leads the population cancer registries for the region and Indian cooperative trials.
