Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah
The Mountain West's NCI comprehensive centre, built on Utah's genealogy-linked population database that helped find BRCA1 and other hereditary cancer genes.
Founded by Jon Huntsman and NCI-designated in 1999 (comprehensive since 2015), Huntsman Cancer Institute serves Utah, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Wyoming. The Utah Population Database, which links genealogies to medical records, enabled the cloning of BRCA1 by Mark Skolnick's group in 1994 and discoveries in familial colorectal cancer and melanoma, and remains a unique resource for hereditary cancer research. Neeraj Agarwal leads major prostate cancer trials, including TALAPRO-2 (talazoparib plus enzalutamide), and the institute operates its own cancer hospital with inpatient and outpatient care. Mary Beckerle is its long-time CEO.
