Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children
London's children's hospital, where gene-edited 'universal' CAR-T cells were first given to a child with leukaemia.
Founded in 1852, Great Ormond Street Hospital is the UK's largest children's hospital and, with the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, one of Europe's leading paediatric research centres. In 2015 Waseem Qasim's team treated an infant with refractory leukaemia using TALEN-edited allogeneic CAR-T cells, the first such use in humans, and in 2022 the team delivered the first base-edited CAR-T (CD7-directed) for T-cell leukaemia. The hospital runs one of the UK's largest paediatric oncology and haematology services, including bone marrow transplantation, neuro-oncology and neuroblastoma programmes, and hosts the Zayed Centre for Research into Rare Disease in Children. It is a principal treatment centre for London and a national referral site for rare childhood cancers.
