The children's hospital where CAR-T therapy first cured a child's leukaemia (Emily Whitehead, 2012) and where neuroblastoma genomics found ALK.
Founded in 1855 as the first children's hospital in the United States, CHOP is the paediatric partner of the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center. Stephan Grupp treated Emily Whitehead with CD19 CAR-T cells in 2012 and led the global ELIANA trial that made tisagenlecleucel the first approved CAR-T therapy in 2017. John Maris's group discovered activating ALK mutations in neuroblastoma in 2008, leading Yael Mossé to bring crizotinib and lorlatinib into paediatric trials, and CHOP's Cancer Center runs one of the largest paediatric cancer predisposition and precision medicine programmes. Peter Adamson chaired the Children's Oncology Group from CHOP, and the hospital's cell therapy, proton therapy (through Penn) and neuro-oncology programmes draw referrals internationally.
