Fox Chase Cancer Center
Philadelphia's free-standing cancer centre, where the Philadelphia chromosome, the two-hit hypothesis and hepatitis B were discovered.
Formed in 1974 from the American Oncologic Hospital (1904) and the Institute for Cancer Research (1927), Fox Chase has held NCI comprehensive designation since 1974 and joined Temple University Health System in 2012. Its scientific record is exceptional: David Hungerford co-discovered the Philadelphia chromosome in 1960, Alfred Knudson proposed the two-hit hypothesis of tumour suppressor genes in 1971, Baruch Blumberg identified hepatitis B and developed its vaccine (Nobel Prize 1976), a cornerstone of liver cancer prevention, and Beatrice Mintz pioneered transgenic mice. Clinical strengths today include kidney and prostate cancer, hereditary cancer risk assessment and radiation oncology.
