American Society for Radiation Oncology
The largest radiation oncology society, whose annual meeting, guidelines and Choosing Wisely lists drive adoption of hypofractionation and stereotactic radiotherapy.
Founded in 1958 as the American Club of Therapeutic Radiologists, ASTRO represents more than 10,000 radiation oncologists, physicists and allied professionals. It publishes the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, Practical Radiation Oncology and Advances in Radiation Oncology, issues evidence-based guidelines (including hypofractionation for breast and prostate cancer and SBRT for early lung cancer), runs the APEx practice accreditation programme and RO-ILS patient safety incident learning system, and advocates on Medicare payment models for radiotherapy. Its annual meeting each autumn is the principal venue for radiotherapy trial results, and it partners with ESTRO and the NRG on international standards.
