Disseminated tumour cells (DTCs)

Single cancer cells that have already spread to distant organs, often found in bone marrow years before any metastasis appears.

Detected by bone marrow aspiration (cytokeratin staining) in ~30% of early breast cancer patients and prognostic for relapse; most are dormant and non-proliferating. The biological substrate of MRD and late recurrence.
