Cancer cells rewire their metabolism to build biomass fast, burning glucose inefficiently and gorging on glutamine and lipids.
The Warburg effect and its relatives define this hallmark. It is exploited by FDG PET for imaging, antimetabolite chemotherapy, and IDH inhibitors; broader metabolic drugs have struggled against metabolic plasticity.
