Hospital Clínic de Barcelona / IDIBAPS

aka Hospital Clínic, IDIBAPS, Clínic Barcelona Comprehensive Cancer Center

Barcelona's university hospital, home of the BCLC liver cancer staging system, the first European academic CAR-T and leading breast and lymphoma genomics.

Hospital Clínic and its research institute IDIBAPS form one of Spain's strongest academic medical centres. The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer group of Jordi Bruix and Josep Maria Llovet created the BCLC staging and treatment algorithm and led the SHARP trial that made sorafenib the first systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma. Elías Campo's group mapped the genome of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia within the ICGC and co-edits the WHO haematolymphoid classification, Aleix Prat's group advanced intrinsic subtyping (PAM50, HER2DX) in breast cancer, and the hospital's ARI-0001 CD19 CAR-T, developed by Manel Juan and Álvaro Urbano-Ispizua, became the first academic CAR-T authorised in Europe under Spain's hospital exemption in 2021. The centre is OECI-accredited and runs a large early-phase and haematology programme.
