Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre / CRUK Scotland Institute
Scotland's largest cancer centre, named after the surgeon who first used endocrine therapy for breast cancer, next to a leading cancer biology institute.
The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre at Gartnavel is the tertiary oncology centre for the west of Scotland and one of the largest in the UK. It takes its name from Sir George Beatson, who in 1896 reported that removing the ovaries could shrink advanced breast cancer, the first endocrine therapy. The adjacent Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute (formerly the Beatson Institute, founded 1967) under Owen Sansom is known for genetically engineered mouse models of colorectal and pancreatic cancer, cancer metabolism and cell death research, and the University of Glasgow's Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre hosts Andrew Biankin's Precision-Panc programme for pancreatic cancer. Patients have access to a large radiotherapy service, early-phase trials and Scotland's molecular pathology network.
