Susan Love

Susan Love (1948-2023) was one of the first women to become a breast surgeon in the United States, at Beth Israel and later as director of the UCLA Breast Center. Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book (1990), now in its seventh edition, became the reference that let patients understand their options and question the reflex to mastectomy. In 1991 she co-founded the National Breast Cancer Coalition with Fran Visco. Through the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation she pursued the causes and prevention of breast cancer, and in 2008 launched the Army of Women, later Love Research Army, which enrolled more than 380,000 volunteers willing to be contacted for studies, cutting recruitment times for researchers. She was treated for acute myeloid leukaemia in 2012 and wrote about being a patient. She died in July 2023.
