Kate Granger
A geriatrician with a rare sarcoma who noticed that the staff treating her did not introduce themselves. Her 2013 campaign, #hellomynameis, was adopted by hundreds of thousands of health workers.
Kate Granger (1981-2016) was a consultant geriatrician in Yorkshire when, in 2011 at 29, she was diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumour, a rare and aggressive sarcoma. During a hospital admission in 2013 she observed that many of the staff caring for her did not tell her their names, and with her husband Chris Pointon launched #hellomynameis, a campaign asking every health worker to introduce themselves to every patient. It was adopted by more than 400,000 NHS staff and spread to health systems in more than 20 countries. She wrote two books about being a doctor and a patient, raised more than £250,000 for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, and was appointed MBE in 2015. She died on 23 July 2016 at 34. The campaign continues under her husband's leadership.
