Jade Goody
A reality-television star whose cervical cancer and death at 27 in 2009 were followed by hundreds of thousands of extra cervical screening tests in England: the "Jade Goody effect".
Jade Goody (1981-2009) rose to fame on Big Brother in 2002. In August 2008 she learned she had cervical cancer while appearing on the Indian version of the show. She chose to live the last months of her life in public, including her wedding, and died on 22 March 2009, Mother's Day, at 27. Cervical screening attendance in England, which had been falling for a decade, rose sharply in 2008-09; NHS analyses attributed several hundred thousand additional tests to her case, with the largest rise among women in their twenties. The effect faded within a few years, a lesson often cited in screening policy about the difference between awareness and durable uptake.
