Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute

aka Sanford Burnham Prebys, La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation

La Jolla research institute and NCI basic cancer centre, birthplace of integrin and RGD-peptide biology and home to a major academic drug-screening centre.

Founded in 1976 by Erkki Ruoslahti as the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation and NCI-designated since 1981, Sanford Burnham Prebys is a basic laboratory cancer centre whose founding discoveries in integrins and RGD adhesion peptides created the field of tumour-homing peptides. The Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics is one of the largest non-profit drug discovery and high-throughput screening facilities in academia. Current programmes span cancer metabolism, the tumour microenvironment and immune evasion, paediatric cancers and computational biology. The institute works alongside Salk, Scripps and UC San Diego on the Torrey Pines mesa.
