Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical Center
The first compact university-based carbon-ion therapy centre in Japan, treating prostate, liver, lung and bone and soft-tissue tumours since 2010.
Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical Center began treatment in 2010 as the first compact carbon-ion facility built on a university campus, using a downsized synchrotron designed with NIRS (now QST). It treats prostate, hepatocellular, lung, pancreatic, head and neck and sarcoma patients and has published widely on hypofractionated carbon-ion schedules and on radiobiology of high-LET radiation. The centre is linked to Gunma University's Graduate School of Medicine and to the Japan Carbon-ion Radiation Oncology Study Group (J-CROS), which pooled outcomes across Japanese facilities to support national insurance coverage for carbon-ion therapy.
