Wilmot Cancer Institute, University of Rochester

Upstate New York's Wilmot Cancer Institute, NCI-designated in 2024 and a national leader in geriatric oncology and cancer-control research.

Wilmot Cancer Institute at the University of Rochester Medical Center received NCI designation in 2024 and serves a largely rural 27-county region of upstate New York. It hosts one of the NCI Community Oncology Research Program's national research bases, historically led by Gary Morrow, whose trials on nausea, fatigue and exercise defined cancer-control research; Karen Mustian's exercise oncology and Supriya Mohile's geriatric assessment trials (GAP70+) showed that assessing older patients reduces chemotherapy toxicity. Jonathan Friedberg, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, leads its lymphoma programme. Director Jonathan Friedberg and cancer biologist Hartmut Land have built basic programmes in tumour evolution and haematologic malignancy.
