Belgium's largest university hospital and an OECI-accredited comprehensive cancer centre, with world-class gastrointestinal, gynaecological and angiogenesis research.

The Leuven Cancer Institute coordinates cancer care and research across UZ Leuven and KU Leuven and holds OECI comprehensive cancer centre status. Eric Van Cutsem's gastrointestinal group led the CRYSTAL and other trials that defined anti-EGFR therapy in RAS wild-type colorectal cancer, Ignace Vergote shaped surgical and medical management of ovarian cancer through EORTC and ENGOT trials, and Frédéric Amant founded the international network on cancer during pregnancy. The VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology (Peter Carmeliet, Diether Lambrechts, Jean-Christophe Marine) is a leading site for angiogenesis, tumour genomics and melanoma research, and Hans Wildiers is a reference in geriatric oncology. The ParTICLe proton therapy centre opened on the Gasthuisberg campus in 2020.
