University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center

aka UCCCC

Where Charles Huggins proved hormones drive prostate cancer and Janet Rowley found the chromosome translocations behind leukaemia; strong in tumour immunology today.

NCI-designated since 1973 and comprehensive since 2008, the University of Chicago has two foundational cancer discoveries to its name: Charles Huggins's demonstration that castration controls prostate cancer (Nobel Prize 1966), the origin of hormonal therapy, and Janet Rowley's identification of recurrent chromosomal translocations, including the 9;22 translocation that produces BCR-ABL. Today Thomas Gajewski's laboratory defined the T-cell-inflamed ('hot') tumour phenotype and the gut microbiome's influence on checkpoint response; Everett Vokes established chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancer; Susan Cohn leads international neuroblastoma risk classification. The centre is building a dedicated cancer hospital on its Hyde Park campus.
