Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute

aka Karmanos, Michigan Cancer Foundation

Detroit's NCI comprehensive cancer centre, where the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line was derived in 1973, now part of McLaren Health Care.

Karmanos descends from the Michigan Cancer Foundation, where in 1973 Herbert Soule derived MCF-7, the oestrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer cell line that became the most studied cancer cell model in the world. NCI-designated since 1978, it is Wayne State University's cancer centre and, since 2014, part of McLaren Health Care, giving it a statewide network of cancer sites across Michigan. It has long run one of the larger academic phase 1 programmes and studies cancer in Detroit's predominantly Black population. Karmanos also operates the Detroit metropolitan SEER registry.
