Instituto Alexander Fleming

aka IAF, Fleming

Argentina's leading private cancer institute, a key site for international breast, lung and gastrointestinal trials and the home of the Argentine cooperative group tradition.

The Instituto Alexander Fleming was founded in Buenos Aires in 1994 as a dedicated cancer institute by a group of oncologists including Reinaldo Chacón, and has become Argentina's most research-active cancer centre, with medical, surgical and radiation oncology, haematology, nuclear medicine and a large clinical research department that has enrolled Argentine patients in many of the pivotal breast (HER2, CDK4/6), lung and colorectal cancer trials of the last three decades. It hosts the Grupo Argentino de Investigación Clínica en Oncología (GAICO) and links with the Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group, offers a fellowship programme and tumour banking, and was an early adopter in Argentina of precision oncology and next-generation sequencing.
