The only NCI-designated centre in the Pacific, co-founder of the Multiethnic Cohort Study of cancer risk across Asian, Pacific Islander and other populations.
NCI-designated since 1996, the University of Hawai'i Cancer Center serves Hawai'i and the US-affiliated Pacific islands and is the only NCI centre in the region. With USC it founded the Multiethnic Cohort Study in 1993, following Japanese American, Native Hawaiian, Latino, Black and white participants to dissect ethnic differences in cancer risk, diet and genetics. Research strengths follow the population: liver and stomach cancer linked to viral hepatitis and H. pylori, tobacco and betel use, and disparities affecting Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. The centre runs early-phase trials with Hawai'i's hospitals through the Hawai'i Cancer Consortium.
