European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism
The European clinical nutrition society whose guidelines on nutrition in cancer patients define screening for malnutrition and the treatment of cachexia in oncology.
Founded in 1979, ESPEN promotes research and education in clinical nutrition and metabolism and publishes Clinical Nutrition and its companion journals. Its ESPEN guidelines on nutrition in cancer patients (2017, updated as practical guidelines in 2021) and its expert group recommendations on cancer cachexia set out screening, energy and protein targets, exercise and pharmacological approaches, and they are referenced by ESMO and by national oncology guidelines. ESPEN's GLIM criteria for diagnosing malnutrition, developed with the other regional societies, are used in oncology trials and clinical practice, and its annual congress and Life Long Learning programme train clinicians across Europe.
