EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute

EMBL-EBI is the bioinformatics site of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (founded 1974; the EBI opened in Hinxton in 1994). It maintains open resources that cancer research runs on: Ensembl genome annotation, UniProt (with SIB and PIR), ChEMBL drug and bioactivity data, the PDBe structure archive, Expression Atlas, Europe PMC literature, the European Genome-phenome Archive for controlled-access patient genomes, and the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database built with Google DeepMind. It is a founding partner of Open Targets with the Sanger Institute and pharmaceutical companies, and trains thousands of scientists a year. EMBL's Heidelberg and other sites contribute structural, cell and imaging biology.
