Christian Medical College, Vellore, was founded in 1900 by American missionary Ida Scudder and is one of India's most respected teaching hospitals. Its Department of Haematology, built by Mammen Chandy and Alok Srivastava, performed India's first successful bone marrow transplant in 1986 and pioneered low-cost transplant, thalassaemia and haemophilia gene therapy, and its Centre for Stem Cell Research is a national translational hub; paediatric and adult leukaemia care and the Indian Collaborative Childhood Leukaemia group's trials are anchored here. CMC also runs large head and neck, gastrointestinal, gynaecological and radiation oncology services and pioneered India's community health and palliative care models.
