UPMC Hillman Cancer Center
Pittsburgh's NCI comprehensive centre: Bernard Fisher's NSABP home, discoverer of two cancer viruses, and a leader in melanoma and LAG-3 immunotherapy.
NCI comprehensive since 1990, UPMC Hillman spans western Pennsylvania through UPMC's network. Bernard Fisher led the NSABP from Pittsburgh, proving with B-06 that lumpectomy plus radiation equals mastectomy and with P-1 that tamoxifen prevents breast cancer; NSABP lives on within NRG Oncology. Yuan Chang and Patrick Moore discovered Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus in 1994 and Merkel cell polyomavirus in 2008. Dario Vignali's LAG-3 biology underpins relatlimab, Hassane Zarour and Diwakar Davar showed faecal microbiota transplant can overcome anti-PD-1 resistance in melanoma, and Greg Delgoffe studies T-cell metabolism in tumours. The centre also has a large head and neck cancer immunotherapy programme.
