Institute of Oncology Ljubljana

Founded in 1938, the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana is Slovenia's only comprehensive cancer centre and is accredited by the OECI. It hosts the Cancer Registry of Republic of Slovenia, established in 1950 as one of the earliest population-based registries in Europe, and runs the national screening programmes. Gregor Serša and Maja Čemažar's group pioneered electrochemotherapy, combining electric pulses with bleomycin or cisplatin, and the institute led the European ESOPE standard operating procedures; it also has strong programmes in melanoma, breast and head and neck cancer, radiotherapy and brachytherapy, and medical oncology trials. The institute serves as the teaching base for oncology at the University of Ljubljana.
