The north-east of England's cancer centre and the birthplace of the first PARP inhibitor to reach patients, rucaparib.
The Northern Centre for Cancer Care at the Freeman Hospital and the Great North Children's Hospital provide tertiary cancer care for the North East and Cumbria, while Newcastle University's Centre for Cancer is a Cancer Research UK centre with a drug discovery unit. Newcastle chemists and pharmacologists (Hilary Calvert, Nicola Curtin, Herbie Newell, Bernard Golding) discovered rucaparib with Agouron, and Ruth Plummer led the first-in-human trial of a PARP inhibitor in 2003. The Wolfson Childhood Cancer Research Centre is a leader in medulloblastoma and childhood leukaemia biology, and the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre runs early-phase trials. Newcastle also hosts national programmes in ageing and cancer and in mitochondrial disease.
