Leiden University Medical Center

aka LUMC, Leiden Oncology Center

Leiden's university hospital, a cradle of therapeutic cancer vaccines and tumour immunology and the base for the Dutch TME rectal cancer trial.

The LUMC's tumour immunology tradition runs from Cornelis Melief's synthetic long peptide HPV16 vaccine, developed with ISA Pharmaceuticals, to the immunology groups of Sjoerd van der Burg and Ferry Ossendorp, and Ton Schumacher and John Haanen of the Netherlands Cancer Institute hold Leiden professorships. Cornelis van de Velde's Dutch TME trial established total mesorectal excision with short-course radiotherapy as the standard for rectal cancer, and Judith Bovée's pathology group is a world reference for bone and soft tissue tumours. Leiden co-owns the Holland Proton Therapy Centre and runs a large haematology and transplant programme. The Leiden Oncology Center coordinates care with regional hospitals.
