Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Iowa

Iowa's only NCI-designated centre, home to the national neuroendocrine tumour SPORE and pharmacological ascorbate research.

NCI-designated since 2000, Holden serves the state of Iowa and is the only NCI comprehensive centre between Chicago and Omaha. It holds the NCI's only Specialized Program of Research Excellence dedicated to neuroendocrine tumours, building on decades of somatostatin-receptor work, and offers peptide receptor radionuclide therapy. Its free-radical radiation biology programme has carried high-dose intravenous vitamin C (pharmacological ascorbate) from bench to randomised trials in pancreatic cancer and glioblastoma. The centre also runs a statewide cancer registry and rural outreach programmes.
